Before the Resorts: West Maui’s Plantation Era
Before hotels and beachfront condos lined the coast, the area we now call Kaanapali was largely agricultural. Throughout the early and mid-20th century, much of West Maui was dominated by sugarcane cultivation.
Large plantations operated across the region, supported by irrigation systems that carried water from the West Maui Mountains down to the fields below. Plantation communities formed the backbone of local life, with workers and families living in small towns throughout the island. The coastline itself—now famous around the world—was quiet and largely undeveloped.
The Vision for Kaanapali
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Hawaii was entering a new era. Following statehood in 1959, tourism began to grow rapidly, and developers recognized the potential of Maui’s beautiful west coast.
One of the largest landowners on the island, Amfac, created an ambitious plan to transform Kaanapali into Hawaii’s first master-planned resort community.
